Commonly referred to as a "Coachman's Quaff," the Yard of Ale glass has come to symbolize the unique character of the British pub. First used to toast the health of King James II and later to hold refreshment for stagecoach drivers the yard of ale glass is currently known for use in pub decor and/or sculling competitions where attempts are made to drink an entire Yard of ale in the least time possible.
